About

Where Evidence Meets Lived Experience

Hello and welcome. I’m Fatimah B. Ali, Ph.D., a public health professional dedicated to advancing community wellness through education, collaboration, advocacy, and research. With experience spanning academia, community outreach, corporate wellness coaching, and clinical research project management, my work is grounded in a deep commitment to improving health outcomes through equitable, community-informed approaches.
As a woman living with lupus, my personal journey has profoundly shaped my professional path. I am passionate about transforming lived experience into meaningful impact — particularly within the lupus community, where research, awareness, and compassion intersect. Through collaborative research initiatives, I aim to elevate the voices of people living with lupus while bridging the gap between science, health education, and everyday reality.

Cultivating Community & Tools

I am the creator of Lupus in Community, a Substack newsletter and platform focused on conversation, connection, and support for those navigating chronic illness. Through evidence-based research, practical digital tools, essays, and interactive community chats, this space reminds individuals that they do not have to navigate their journey alone. The community chat feature, in particular, serves as a sanctuary for authentic connection, encouragement, and dialogue among followers. I hope you will join us.

Beyond the Research

Outside of my professional work, I find joy and restoration in culinary gardening — growing vibrant herbs and produce that nourish both body and spirit. This appreciation for growth, resilience, and healing inspired my first children’s book, Lulu’s Secret Garden: Blooming Big with Lupus, a heartfelt story designed to encourage understanding, empathy, and hope for children and families navigating chronic illness.
Every facet of my work, from public health initiatives and research collaboration to storytelling and community-building, reflects my unwavering belief that healing and learning flourish through connection, collaboration, and care.

Lulu's Secret Garden: Blooming Big with Lupus

A children’s eBook written by Fatimah Ali, PhD, under the pen name Matina Alby, Lulu’s Secret Garden: Blooming Big with Lupus is a gentle story about growing through difficult seasons with patience, hope, and care.

Written for children, families, and caregivers, the book offers a compassionate way to begin conversations about chronic illness, emotional resilience, and the different ways people heal and grow.
Especially meaningful for parents, grandparents, and caregivers living with chronic illness, the story creates a safe and accessible space for helping young readers understand health challenges, physical limitations, and the quiet strength found in resilience.

Through thoughtful storytelling and comforting imagery, Lulu’s Secret Garden reminds readers of all ages that growth does not happen on a schedule — and that blooming in your own time is still blooming beautifully.

Research & Community Initiatives

Collaborative Research, Community-Informed Care

Project CHANGE – Lupus Research Therapeutics

Served as Research Chair for Project CHANGE, leading a community-based public health initiative using CBPR principles in addressing lupus awareness and clinical trial engagement gaps among Black American women. This work emphasized culturally responsive education, community voice, and collaborative approaches to improving representation, trust, and health outcomes in lupus research.

"Dr. Ali brings both lived experience and strong cultural insight to her work."

— Taylor A., Leadership Team Member

Community Outreach Advisory Collaboration – CAR T Lupus Clinical Trial

Contributed to a lupus community outreach advisory collaboration between Bristol Myers Squibb and Lupus Therapeutics focused on strengthening community engagement strategies for a CAR T lupus clinical trial. As part of a multidisciplinary advisory group composed of lupus investigators and individuals living with lupus, provided community-informed guidance on outreach materials and engagement approaches to support representative participation, accessibility, and trust in lupus clinical research initiatives.

Clinical Trial Education Collaboration – Lupus Research Alliance

Collaborated with Lupus Research Alliance and Lupus Therapeutics to support community-centered lupus clinical trial education through Lupus in Community. Developed patient-focused interview questions exploring the importance of lupus clinical trials and research participation, with responses provided by Caroline Donevan for the feature, “Why Clinical Trials Matter — And Why You Deserve to Know.” This collaboration aimed to make clinical trial information more accessible, relatable, and community-informed for people living with lupus.

"On behalf of the Lupus Research Alliance, thank you for your tireless efforts in helping to educate about lupus and the absolute need for more attention, treatments, diagnostics, and more. You are a true lupus warrior, and I look forward to more collaboration with you in the future."

— Caren Begun
